Restoration of Ghor's Historic Minaret of Jam Officially Begins

on 29 Muharram 1448 AH. The first phase of restoration work on the historic Minaret of Jam has officially begun following a meeting between a delegation from the Ministry of Information and Culture, the Aga Khan Cultural Service, and Mawlawi Abdul Hai Zaeem, Director of Information and Culture for Ghor Province.
The meeting focused on implementing the Minaret's restoration project and commencing its initial conservation phase.
Speaking at the meeting, Amanullah Sahibzada, Provincial Coordinator of the Aga Khan Cultural Service, said the project is being implemented through joint coordination among the Ministry of Information and Culture, the Aga Khan Cultural Service, and UNESCO. He noted that the restoration is being carried out under the supervision of specialized technical teams and expert engineers, with the first phase concentrating on stabilizing and strengthening the structure while laying the foundation for its long-term conservation.
Mawlawi Abdul Hai Zaeem, Director of Information and Culture for Ghor Province, expressed appreciation for the continued support provided by the Ministry of Information and Culture, UNESCO, and the Aga Khan Cultural Service in safeguarding the province's rich historical heritage. He reaffirmed the provincial administration's commitment to providing the visiting technical teams with full cooperation and all necessary facilitation throughout every stage of the assessment, restoration, and documentation of Ghor's historical monuments.
Rising 63 meters above the Hari Rud Valley, the Minaret of Jam is widely recognized as the world's second-tallest brick minaret after Delhi's Qutb Minar. It is one of the most remarkable surviving monuments of the Ghurid Dynasty. In recent years, the monument has sustained damage as a result of natural disasters, underscoring the need for comprehensive restoration and long-term preservation to safeguard this invaluable cultural landmark for future generations.
