The Minaret of Jam, one of Afghanistan’s most cherished historical landmarks, has been reinforced with protective gabion structures to improve its stability and protect it from environmental threats. According to officials from the Ghor Directorate of Information and Culture, the preservation and reinforcement project, which commenced several months ago, has been completed. The initiative was officially inaugurated by Mawlawi Abdul Hai Zaeem, the Director of Information and Culture, along with representatives from the Governor’s Office and various sectoral agencies.

During the inauguration ceremony, Mawlawi Zaeem underscored the significance of the project, pointing out that the Minaret of Jam has long been susceptible to seasonal floods and river erosion. A strong gabion protection system was built around the monument to reduce these risks. This project was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Culture and was funded by the Asian Development Bank, with a total investment of 2.24 million Afghanis.

The newly installed gabion structure stretches 267 meters in length, 1.5 meters in width, and 1 meter in height. The final phase of the project involved reinforcing the backfill material within the gabion structures to ensure long-term durability and effectiveness.

Since the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan regained control, significant restoration and conservation efforts have been launched to protect Afghanistan’s rich historical heritage. In particular, the preservation of the Minaret of Jam has been a top priority, reflecting a strong commitment to safeguarding the nation’s cultural legacy for future generations.
