On Thursday, February 27, 2025 (28 Sha'ban 1446), the deputy ministry for Publications, at the Ministry of Information and Culture, the directorate of the Dailies, celebrated the 63rd anniversary of The Kabul Times newspaper with a special ceremony.

During the event, Deputy Minister Mohajer Farahi emphasized that The Kabul Times serves as the voice of the nation, playing a crucial role in delivering accurate information about Afghanistan's developments to the international community.

Established on February 27, 1962 (8 Hoot 1340) during the reign of King Zahir Shah and the premiership of Mohammad Daoud Khan, The Kabul Times was founded under the leadership of Sabahuddin Kushkaki. Initially published two to three times a week, it transitioned to a daily newspaper two years later.

At that time, foreign visitors to Afghanistan had no access to news in English or other international languages, as the only media outlet, Radio Kabul, broadcast solely in Pashto and Dari. To address this gap, The Kabul Times became the country’s first English-language publication, primarily catering to foreign embassies, airports, and domestic institutions—a role it continues to fulfill today.

The Ministry of Information and Culture of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan remains committed to supporting a free and active media landscape.

Since the country’s liberation, numerous new private media outlets have been launched, while existing ones continue their operations. Currently, Afghanistan is home to 470 active media outlets, including 84 television channels, 273 radio stations, 57 news agencies, and 52 print publications.

However, some media outlets that were foreign-funded for specific agendas and operated against national interests have been closed.
