Acting MoIC: Journalists Committed Spokesmen For People

Acting Minister of Information and Culture, Mohammad Tahir Zuhair, in a commemoration meeting of late Elyas Dayee, Radio Azadi senior correspondent, said that journalists were the committed spokesmen of the people. Elyas Dayee, a journalist working for the Radio Azadi was killed, after his car was blown-up by a bomb in the southern Helmand province.

In the meeting which attended by a number of House of People members, government officials and media activists, the acting minister extended his sincere prayers to the soul of Elyas Dayee and said: “They took Elyas Dayee for releasing reports and providing awareness about the realities and events in the country.” He said the position of the journalists, the media and media activists were as high as no one could deny and that they enjoy special value and in fact ‘they are the committed spokesmen of the people of Afghanistan.’

The acting minister noted that the journalists and media play key role in the strengthening of democracy and preventing corruption and that the Ministry of Information and Culture was responsible to preserve the positions and rights of journalists as it supported their rights in accordance with the law, as did in the past.

Other participants including the deputy presidential spokesman, Dawa Khan Mina Pal, people representative from Helmand Province, at the parliament, Ghulam Wali Afghan, Siddiqullah Tawhidi, representing the media spoke on the occasion and asked for arresting those behind Elyas Dayee’s death and bringing them to justice. They also asked the government, the Ministry of Information and Culture and the Radio Azadi to support the families of the martyred media-persons and Elyas Dayee.
