Delegation from the European Union and UNESCO Visits National Museum and Directorate of Fine Arts
On Thursday (28th of Muharram 1447 AH), Ms. Veronika Bescovic, Chargé d’Affaires of the European Union in Afghanistan, along with representatives from UNESCO, visited the National Museum and the Directorate of Fine Arts. The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Shafiqullah Ahmadzai, Director of Foreign Relations at the Ministry of Information and Culture.
During their visit, the delegation toured various sections of the National Museum. Mawlawi Sabiqatullah Abid, Director of the National Museum, provided the guests with a comprehensive overview of the museum’s history, functions, and operations. He emphasized that museums represent the collective cultural heritage of nations and affirmed the museum’s commitment to preserving Afghanistan’s rich historical artifacts with the utmost care.
He noted that all artifacts have been systematically catalogued into a digital database, and serious efforts are underway to prevent the smuggling of cultural property. To date, hundreds of attempts to smuggle historical items have been successfully thwarted.
Mawlawi Abid also highlighted that the museum’s staff is highly professional, and ongoing training programs are in place to further enhance their expertise. He urged international organizations and cultural institutions to strengthen their cooperation with the National Museum.
“Although regime changes in the past have led to the destruction and loss of cultural treasures,” he said, “we are grateful that, since the victory of the Islamic Emirate, no damage has occurred to the National Museum or similar institutions across the country. All artifacts remain safe and secure, and many new discoveries have been added to the museum’s collection.”
Ms. Veronika Bescovic commended the efforts of the Islamic Emirate in protecting cultural heritage. She stated:
“Cultural heritage symbolizes national unity and serves as a bridge connecting diverse ethnic communities. The steps taken to safeguard historical artifacts and prevent their smuggling are highly praiseworthy.”
The delegation also visited the Directorate of Fine Arts, where they toured the Ghulam Mohammad Maimanagi Art Training Center and observed various artistic disciplines in practice. Mawlawi Mohammad Lal Munib, Director of the Directorate of Fine Arts, warmly welcomed the guests and briefed them on the center’s activities and educational programs.
He explained that the Directorate oversees and promotes artistic endeavors at the national level, supports local artists, and currently trains hundreds of students in multiple artistic fields. These students, taught by experienced instructors, undergo a structured 1.5-year educational program before graduating.
At the conclusion of the visit, Mawlawi Munib presented a handcrafted artwork as a token of appreciation to Ms. Veronika Bescovic.
