The Deputy Minister for Art and Culture at the Ministry of Information and Culture, Mawlawi Atiqullah Azizi, has stated that illegal activities at the ancient Kafir Kot archaeological site have ended following the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate.
He made the remarks during a visit to the Kafir Kot archaeological site in Kharwar District, leading a delegation from the Ministry of Information and Culture.
The delegation included the Director of Archaeology, Sayed Zabihullah Sadat; the Director of Historical Monuments, Mohammad Nasim Nasimi; the Director of Public Libraries, Dr. Rafiullah Samim; the Director of Information and Culture for Logar Province, Mawlawi Sawab Jan Islamyar; the District Governor of Kharwar, Mawlawi Mohammad Ayub Khadem; and several other officials.
During the visit, Mawlawi Azizi said the purpose of the trip was to meet district officials and review efforts to protect historical sites in line with the decree of the Amir al-Mu’minin (may Allah protect him). He stressed the importance of preserving archaeological and historical heritage sites across the country.
He noted that the Kafir Kot site in Kharwar District holds significant historical value at the national level, with its origins dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries CE.
Mawlawi Azizi further stated that extensive illegal excavations had taken place at the site in previous years; however, such activities have been halted since the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate.
The Director of Information and Culture for Logar Province said the department has paid full attention to the protection of historical and archaeological sites. He added that, last year, a professional archaeological team from the Ministry of Information and Culture demarcated the boundaries of the Kafir Kot site.
Meanwhile, Director of Archaeology Sayed Zabihullah Sadat described Kafir Kot as one of the country’s most important archaeological sites, noting its rich historical background. He said numerous ancient artefacts from earlier centuries have been recovered from the site, while research work is still ongoing.
It is worth noting that Logar Province is home to more than 250 archaeological sites, in addition to dozens of ancient sites linked to Mes Aynak.
