The Ministry of Information and Culture’s Deputy Ministry for Publications Affairs, in cooperation with the Nangarhar Directorate of Information and Culture, held a one-day training seminar entitled “Strengthening Intellectual, Religious and Professional Capacities” for hundreds of journalists, media officials, writers, activists and young people. Minister of Information and Culture Sheikh Sher Ahmad Haqqani, Deputy Minister for Publications Affairs Mawlawi Muhajir Farahi, a number of officials from Nangarhar’s provincial administration, several directors of the Ministry, and university lecturers also attended the seminar.
At the beginning of the seminar, Director of Information and Culture of Nangarhar Mawlawi Zabihullah Noorani said that the seminar had been organized to strengthen the professional capacities of journalists and media practitioners so that they could properly fulfill their responsibilities for the development and well-being of society.
Minister of Information and Culture Sheikh Sher Ahmad Haqqani also said that such seminars were very important for journalists, writers, activists and media practitioners, because through such programmes they could benefit from the experience and knowledge of others and strengthen their capacities. He said that over the past 20 years, the media had been given the name of freedom, but in reality the media had been used to achieve specific objectives, and fortunately, with the return of the Islamic Emirate to power, such issues had been eliminated.
According to the minister, media activities should not be carried out solely for material benefits. Rather, efforts should be made to ensure that such activities are carried out for the benefit of the people, the strengthening of Islamic beliefs and the development of society.
Deputy Minister for Publications Affairs Mawlawi Muhajir Farahi said at the seminar that a Muslim journalist should understand what responsibilities he has toward the country and the people and, in accordance with his media mission, should properly perform his duty of clarifying the facts. He also said that some Pakistani media outlets were very shamelessly seeking justifications for the killing of innocent people in Afghanistan. Therefore, Afghan journalists and media practitioners should make the distorted information and false propaganda of such media outlets clear to their compatriots and the international community.
According to him, some foreign circles were trying to once again fuel insecurity in Afghanistan. Therefore, media practitioners should work toward unity and coordination against such efforts and inform the people about the schemes of the enemies.
Mawlawi Safiullah Raed, Director of Mass Media Monitoring at the Deputy Ministry for Publications Affairs, along with a number of provincial officials and university lecturers, also spoke about the principles of journalism, the responsibilities of the media and the importance of professional journalism. They said that if a journalist and writer-activist is professional and possesses an alert conscience, he can become a strong line of defense for society against the ideological struggle. The profession of journalism is not merely the dissemination of news. The profession of journalism is a trust and a great responsibility toward the people. Therefore, a professional journalist should possess intellectual awareness, religious steadfastness and professional competence.
The speakers added that Allah Almighty had given media practitioners the power of the pen and the media, and therefore they should properly use this power for the benefit and support of the country, the people and the Islamic system.
