World Science Day for Peace and Development Marked in Kabul

Addressing a ceremony marking the World Science Day for Peace and Development here in Kabul, Acting Minister of Information and Culture, Mohammad Tahir Zuhair said that Afghanistan has small share in science production.

This year’s world day of science with theme “Science for and with Society in dealing with the global pandemic” celebrated yesterday at the Ministry of Information and Culture in cooperation with Ghalib University and Afghanistan’s center for study and development, Bakhtar Information Agency reported.

Addressing the event, the acting minister of information and culture said Afghans once had many scientific personalities who are among the human heroes, but now, he said that due to four decades of war, Afghanistan’s share in the production of science is very small compared to other countries.

According to the minister, per capita study in Afghanistan, except for educational centers, is one minute per year, which indicates the backwardness of science and development in the country. The minister, as quoted by the agency, said that Afghan government has taken concrete steps for tackling Coronavirus, asking for further measures so that to prevent casualties.

Meanwhile Ghalib university chancellor, Abdul Rahman Hamid, said although Afghanistan was among consumers of sciences, but the educational centers were trying hard to have share in science production, pointing to production of Coronavirus recognition device as the example.

Sayed Hussain Alemi Balkhi, head of Afghanistan center for study and development said celebration of the day aimed to provide the opportunity for debate on peace and development in the country. He also pointed to crucial role of science in a society, asking international community to help broke the deadlock in Afghan peace process.

World Science Day for Peace and Development is observed on November 10 every year to raise the importance and relevance of science in the daily lives. It highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues.
