International Museum Day Celebrated with a Prestigious Ceremony

On Sunday, the 20th of Dhul-Qa'dah 1446 AH ( May 18, 2025), the Directorate of the National Museum, under the Deputy Ministry of Art and Culture, Ministry of Information and Culture, organized a prestigious ceremony to commemorate International Museum Day. The event was held in the main auditorium of the National Museum in Kabul.
The gathering was graced by the presence of Mohajer Farahi, Deputy Minister for Publications; Mawlawi Atiqullah Azizi, Deputy Minister for Art and Culture; representatives from foreign embassies; officials and delegates from partner institutions; distinguished cultural figures; and numerous members of the media.
International Museum Day is observed globally every year on May 18. This occasion is dedicated to strengthening collaboration among museums, increasing public awareness, and promoting the vital social and educational role that museums play. Since its inception in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the day has served as a platform for museum professionals to connect with their communities.
The opening remarks were delivered by Mawlawi Atiqullah Azizi, who warmly welcomed attendees and expressed his gratitude for their presence. He stated, "Your participation is a source of encouragement, as it reflects your shared commitment to the preservation of Afghanistan’s historical treasures. Museums are not merely buildings filled with objects; they embody the cultural soul of a nation. The National Museum of Afghanistan preserves artifacts dating back over 5,000 years, many of which have been displayed in international exhibitions, proudly representing our country. Museums bridge generations by educating today’s youth about their ancestral past. Each day, hundreds of visitors, including foreign tourists, visit our museum. This engagement highlights the deep value and relevance of our cultural heritage."
Mr. Azizi further emphasized that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan places strong importance on the protection of archaeological heritage and historical landmarks. He noted that His Excellency the Amir al-Mu’minin (may Allah protect him) has issued a landmark decree for the preservation of antiquities and heritage sites, an initiative without precedent in previous administrations. This directive has led to the recovery of numerous illegally seized historical areas and has significantly curbed unauthorized excavations and the smuggling of cultural relics.
Following this, Deputy Minister Mohajer Farahi delivered his address, stating, "Historical artifacts do not belong to governments; they are the pride and cultural identity of nations. Tangible and intangible heritage reflect the dignity and grandeur of our historical legacy. Afghanistan has been home to several prominent civilizations that are unique in the region. The Islamic Emirate has given special attention to this field by not only supporting the development of cultural museums but also launching ‘Jihadi Museums’ to honor and preserve the legacy of past resistance movements."
Mr. Farahi also appealed to writers, cultural experts, and media professionals to actively contribute to the promotion and dissemination of Afghan culture both locally and internationally.
During the ceremony, several other distinguished speakers took the stage, including Seyed Ruhollah Hosseini from the Embassy of Iran, Ding Wan Pen, Public Relations Officer of the Chinese MCC company, and Professor Mojtaba Arefi. Each of them praised the Islamic Emirate’s commendable initiatives in safeguarding Afghanistan’s ancient heritage and emphasized the importance of preserving the cultural legacy.
The event concluded with a heartfelt prayer, marking the end of a memorable and meaningful celebration.
