All Afghans Responsible to Protect Historical Assets, Cultural Heritage: Minister Zuhair

Mohammad Tahir Zuhair, Acting Minister of Information and Culture, at the celebration of the International Museum Day on Tuesday said that historical honors and cultural heritage of the country belong to all people of Afghanistan and they should work to protect it, Bakhtar Information Agency reported.

During the ceremony attended by Haroon Hakimi, Deputy Minister for Culture and Arts of the Ministry of Information and Culture, a number of the Ministry’s directors, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Kabul and a number of domestic and foreign guests, the message of the country’s President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani was read out by Dr. Mohammad Nabi Masdaq, the presidential advisor. In this message, the Ministry of Information and Culture was thanked for celebrating the International Museum Day and holding an exhibition of historical monuments on the occasion, the agency quoted. The message noted that Afghanistan, with a history of thousands of years, is a land of great civilizations and is rich in historical monuments and that the celebration of Museum Day was an opportunity to pay attention to the importance of protecting the historical heritage of our ancestors and to emphasize that the protection of the historical heritage is the national obligation of every citizen of the country. Later, Mohammad Tahir Zuhair, Acting Minister of Information and Culture, congratulated the people of Afghanistan on Museums Day, noting that during the 1970s’ civil war, about 100,000 historical monuments of the Afghan National Museum have been looted, the damage of which, according to him is unimaginable.

He added that in the last 20 years, through national and international efforts, only 9,000 new objects have been returned to the National Museum, both from inside and outside the country, and 10,000 pieces of small works have been recovered.

The minister said that in the last 20 years, as a result of archeological excavations, 25,000 new works have been obtained and registered, the agency quoted. Mohammad Tahir Zuhair considered it important to pay attention to the national museum and local museums of the country and noted that the ministry was working to further improvement of the situation of the national museum.

The minister emphasized that historical honors and cultural heritage of the country belong to all Afghan people and they should work for its protection. Mohammad Fahim Rahimi Director of the National Museum also spoke about World Museums Day, saying that this year’s theme for International Museum day was “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine.” To conclude with, the Acting Minister of Information and Culture inaugurated an exhibition of historical artifacts at the National Museum which was attended by the participants.

The exhibition includes about 1,200 items relating to different periods that have been obtained from various parts of the country in 1399 Solar Year.
